JUNIOR TENNIS PROGRAM
The Mentor Heisley Racquet and Fitness Club junior tennis program under the direction of Tim Morgan (USPTA) provides an excellent opportunity for club members and players from surrounding schools to learn, enjoy, and excel at the great game of tennis. Our teaching pros bring a modern approach to learning the fundamentals of tennis. Our staff includes USPTA and USPTR certified professionals as well as area college players. The goal of our program is to provide our juniors with a positive tennis curriculum that will be both meaningful and appropriate, in an enthusiastic learning environment. Our program is divided into three levels, Quality Start, Development, and Performance. Consult our brochure which is posted monthly for specific days, times, and fees. the schedules are available at the club, or you will find them located below. Pre-registration is preferred. In addition to our instruction programs we offer a junior league program on Sunday afternoon from October thru March.
4-5 years old
This class is designed for players to learn tennis using age appropriate equipment. The sessions for this age group utilize a 36’ court, play with 19”, 21”, 23” racquets, and use the red low compression ball. This structure allows for initial playing success and creates greater enthusiasm for the sport.
6-7 years old
8-12 years old
Students will learn hand eye coordination, basic racquet skills, footwork, and stroke patterns. Games will be played to introduce students to tactics and strategy. The sessions for this age group will utilize a 60' court, play with a 23", 25", or 26" racquet. This class will also use orange low compression balls.
PLAY TENNIS TEENS
13-17 years old
This program is for both beginning and intermediate players entering the above grades. Player level will be divided by court assignment. The movement based curriculum will promote modern tennis concepts. Players enjoy learning with other teens. This program will prepare players to progress to higher level programs.
These players are typically graduates of our Rookies 47 program. This class will focus on all court tennis skills and emphasize a wide range of match play situations. Fed ball and live ball drills will be used to develop rally and decision making skills along with proper movement and recovery. Moderately consistent serve, return of serve, and rally skills are necessary for enrollment in this class along with a plan for USTA tournament participation.
This program is designed for our junior varsity school players hoping to make an impact on their team. Our curriculum will emphasize fundamentals and introduce new concepts. Player development is based on regular participation and learning core fundamentals to allow for greater consistency. Emphasis will be placed on spin development and first strike skills.
The goal of this program is to develop the mental, emotional, and physical aspects of our aspiring juniors. Live ball drills, strategy, conditioning, and match play situations will all be incorporated. Players participating in this program are on their high school varsity teams and have some experience in USTA tournament events.
